How to properly read your horoscope

This morning, I was happily nestled in my beloved's arms and thinking to myself, "Ahhhh... Sunday... the best day of the week to sleep in and do nothing."

THEN, it hit me. I have a meeting in a few hours (yes, on a Sunday), and I have several deadlines tomorrow, so there would definitely be no sleeping in. I reluctantly tore myself away from my sweetie, got up, switched the computer on (yes, it's the first thing I do when I get up in the morning--very bad habit) and logged on to Gmail , where I got my horoscope reading for the day from The Daily Om:

Purposeful Dedication: Aquarius Daily Horoscope

You may feel devoted to your work responsibilities today. You may find that your work provides you with a solace and sense of security that causes you to invest more effort into your job. Perhaps this feeling is the result of a desire to affirm your sense of self through your work. While being dedicated to work is an important part of life, you may want to think about the deeper reasons behind your dedication. Consider analyzing your personal motivation for working. If you find that you are devoted to your tasks out of a sense of commitment to others and not for your self, today may be a good time to reassess your priorities and include yourself in the equation when committing yourself to projects. This may make it easier to act in accordance with your truth so that what you do is in alignment with who you are.

When we understand our true intentions behind anything we do, we are able to fulfill our tasks more effortlessly. By being aware of our intentions, we act from consciousness rather than habit or obligation. Assessing our reasons for our actions gives us the tools to create a more authentic intent—we can then act in alignment with our true desires. When you choose to be aware of your intentions as you work today, you will find it easier to choose work that is in alignment with what you truly want.

I was stunned by how accurate the horoscope reading was, and also grateful that I was reminded of why I was getting up on a Sunday to work. Because I had decided early on to dedicate my life to writing and to sharing others' stories, I have also realized that I must accept that my work doesn't stop on Sundays and holidays. Sometimes, the best stories happen on holidays, and, sometimes, the best time to write is when everyone else is resting, and when there is a general sense of "unhurriedness." Truth be told, I do some of my best writing on Sunday mornings.

That being said, I also realized some things about horoscopes and why I read them. Horoscopes (or at least the serious, credible ones) are not meant to predict the future. They will not (or should not) tell you that you will find true love today, or that you will meet an accident so it's better to stay at home. Only YOU can decide your fate; only YOU can really tell whether what you found today was true love, or whether or not you should really stay at home.

The true purpose of horoscopes is to serve as reminders about certain tendencies that we all have. While they do group people into certain categories with certain traits and predispositions, it doesn't mean that EVERYONE in that horoscope group will act in exactly the same way all the time. (Or that every Aquarian will get up today to work--Paul and I have exactly the same birthday, and I'm sure he ain't getting up anytime soon today.)

To me, reading my daily horoscope is like meditating and then opening a book (or the Bible) on a page where I feel I will receive an important message, or like watching a movie or a TV show and then finding a line that particularly calls out to me: I get out of the message what I bring into it. If I consciously ask for guidance about something that's been on my mind, and if I tune in to the Universe and the energies that surround me, then I know that I will receive the message that I am seeking. Sometimes, it will be as literal as, "Don't be so judgemental on others" or Nike's famous tagline: "Just do it." Other times, it will need a bit of time and reflection to interpret, such as another message I got today: "All things are in the act of change; thou thyself in ceaseless transformation and partial decay, and the whole universe with thee."

So the next time you read your horoscope, don't start jumping for joy when it says, "You will win something today", or don't lock yourself in only because it says, "Beware of loss or accidents today." Instead, reflect on what it is really telling you about a certain situation, conflict, or point of discernment, and then try to distill the message that it is telling YOU about YOUR life. When it says "You will win something today," it could be a new friend, a new client, a new insight, or something that you badly need (and not necessarily material or monetary.) When it says, "Beware of loss or accidents today," it could be the loss of a friendship because of something that you said, or it could be an accident involving something that you were not supposed to do or say.

When it comes to horoscopes (or messages, or Bible passages, or anything else out there) there can be--and very often will be--many interpretations. The best way to know the real answers would be to clarify your thoughts and intentions, rid yourself of whatever excess baggage is currently bringing you down, and really, TRULY knowing yourself and the Source of all that is within you.

Try it out Ü
