The Sun's Curse: A poem for the heartbroken

THE SUN’s CURSE

First read on 14 April 2008

during Romancing Venus: Heat

at Mag:net Cafe Katipunan

A single ray

It penetrates

Pierces

Enflames

Burns

It seeks out

That sweet spot

Where one touch

One kiss

Will send raptures

Through the skin

Consuming everything

That crosses its path

A light of

Eternal contradictions

It is forever present

But never reveals

Its face

It is forever searching

Yet it refuses

To be held

It is always fiery

Yet never warm

It gives life from afar

And kills from up close

Seek it out

And you will perish

I know

For you are like the ray

Your eyes

Scan the horizon

For a target—

A truth

It seeks to own

They pierce

And penetrate

Never stopping

Until flesh is exposed

Until one stands naked

Vulnerable

Bare

Until the fiery rapture

Of singular passion

Consumes everything

In its reach

Reducing everything

To ashes

To nothingness

Nobody ever understood you

And yet they all loved you

They all wanted to be found—

All wanted to be consumed

Even if it meant

Surrendering

To everything that you were—

Everything they did not know

Your eyes were forever present

Yet nobody caught a glimpse

Of your soul

Your face remained unknown

You were forever searching

Yet you were eternally impenetrable

Each glance

Each touch

Each kiss

Bore a hole

Through the heart

And left nothing

But emptiness

And pain

And where are you now?

High up

In the distant heavens

Where all you could do

Is watch from afar

And nurse your silent cries

For nobody will hear you

Nobody will touch you

Nobody will love you

Not anymore
